New Policies from the Trump Administration and How They Affect You as a Worker

It seems as though companies make more and more money while the people who play a huge role in helping these companies make money—the employees—get paid less and less. Even though we are now in the 21st century, workers continue to face wage issues, discrimination and harassment. While on the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised he would help the working class by creating laws that would favor them.

The Trump Administration recently passed a few dozen laws that affect the working class. Will they affect you, and if so, will they work out in your favor? Read on to learn more about the new policies that affect workers.

Tip Pooling

Waiters and others in the service industry work hard for their tips and, under a new law, they may be forced to share them with co-workers. Those who earn at least $7.25 an hour could be asked by their employers to pool their money and share it with those who do not receive tips, like busboys, dishwashers, hosts and cooks. While this law will benefit those who do not currently receive tips, it places a financial burden on waiters and waitresses, who basically now have to share their hard-earned wages. The employers themselves may even get some of the tips, which means more money for them and less for their employees.

Loss of Retirement Savings Options

At the end of July, the Trump Administration ended the myRA savings program. myRA gave workers access to a Roth individual retirement account. This was an affordable option for workers to save for retirement and other life goals.

Discrimination Continues

In July, Trump announced he would ban transgender people from serving in the military, a move that affected thousands of people. That same day, the U.S. Department of Justice defended a company’s decision to fire an employee based solely on his sexual orientation.

Denial of Overtime

Many families depend on overtime pay to cover essentials. Now, millions of working Americans may be denied this opportunity. Former President Barack Obama extended overtime to 4.2 million Americans, but President Trump is looking to allow overtime for far fewer workers.

Fewer Safety Requirements

Safety is of the utmost importance in the workplace, and even more so for some industries. President Trump, however, is looking to roll back numerous safety requirements. For example, construction and shipyard workers would face less protection from a toxic metal called beryllium. Farmworkers would face greater exposure to pesticides. Construction workers could face health issue with delays in forcing employers to limit silica dust exposure.
